Shaun King, a racial activist, claimed on social media on Saturday that he had assisted in Natalie and Judith Raanan’s release, two American hostages held hostage by Hamas.
King wrote on Instagram that Natalie Raanan, one of the prisoners, was a fan of his, and he collaborated with a group of people and the Qatari government to assist obtain her release.
“Hamas has just freed the teenager Natalie Raanan and her mother. I’m grateful. As I said last week, Natalie and her family have been supporters of mine and protested police violence in America alongside us.” King said.
The family disputes the racial activist’s claim that he spoke with Raanan’s family after her release.
During their raid into Southern Israel on October 7, Hamas captured both women. Over 1200 Israelis died as a result of Hamas’ attack on Israel, while 150 civilians were held captive.

On social media, journalist Yuna Leibzon disputed King’s assertion and asserted that the Raanan family had never met the activist.
