Superstar actress Scarlett Johansson accused OpenAI of employing a voice for ChatGPT that was “eerily similar” to her own after declining an offer from the technology company.
Johansson stated in a statement issued on Monday that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman requested her to speak on behalf of his popular AI system last autumn, as he believed it would be “comforting.”
“I was shocked, angered and in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and news outlets could not tell the difference,” the actress said.
Johansson stated that the public, family, and friends all expressed their impression that “Sky,” a vocal option for ChatGPT, sounded similar to her.
In an apparent reference to her role as an AI messaging system in the 2013 film “Her,” Johansson claimed that Altman “insinuated” an intentional similarity by posting “her” on X.

She further stated that lawyers wrote to Altman and OpenAI to request information regarding the creation of the “Sky” voice, which resulted in OpenAI “reluctantly” agreeing to remove it.
