A 67-year-old man serving a life sentence for child molestation was granted compassionate release from jail on Thursday in California.
The Yolo County District Attorney’s Office told KCRA 3 that they objected to Kevin Ellis, the guilty man, being released, but he was eligible due to his physical condition.
Ellis was sentenced in 2014 to more than 100 years in jail. According to a medical assessment from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, he now has a non-curable form of cancer with less than six months to live.
Ellis is now scheduled to be released within 30 days.
According to data from the United States Sentencing Commission for 2023, the Northern and Eastern Districts of California, where Yolo County is located, have a relatively high rate of approving compassionate release motions.
