A polar bear reportedly killed a woman and her child in the remote Alaskan community of Wales on Tuesday.
Tuesday afternoon, the bear reportedly strolled into the village and began chasing people.
After the bear began mauling the mother and the small child, a local resident shot and killed it, but the attack proved fatal for the victims.
Alaska state troopers and representatives of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game will fly to Wales as the weather permits to conduct an investigation into the incident.
The distant community is home to about 150 people, the majority of whom are Inupiaq native americans.
It is located around 100 miles northwest of Nome.
Fatal polar bear assaults are uncommon in the region, though not unheard of.
According to the publication, a polar bear murdered a man in the settlement of Point Bay in 1990.
Three years later, another intruder smashed a glass at an Air Force radar station in the same region, severely attacking a mechanic who managed to escape.
