Police in the northern Italian province of Trentino-Alto Adige, which borders Switzerland and Austria, have reportedly taken custody of the bear believed to have killed a 26-year-old runner earlier in April.
The BBC reported on Tuesday that a 17-year-old bear murdered Andrea Papi as he was exercising in the Brenta Dolomites mountain region.
When forest rangers discovered the bear, known as JJ4, she was in the Meledrio valley with her three pups.
According to the site, authorities ordered the bear to be put down, but the decision was delayed and the she-bear is still at the Casteller animal care facility in the Trento region.
In Italy, bears are a protected species, and since they were reintroduced to the area in the early 2000s, their number has increased.
