The charity of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who is a multibillionaire, will now reportedly allocate $100 million to the advancement of synthetic meat products.
The Bezos Earth Fund has allocated funding for the development of alternative proteins, which the organization regards as a critical initiative due to the fact that food production is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.
This announcement was made on Friday.
The charity is providing North Carolina State University with $30 million over a five-year period to construct a research and development center for fake meat products and components.
Plant-based products, fermented cells that can be incorporated into food products, and lab-grown flesh from cultivated animal cells are among the products that the funding will assist in the development of, according to the Bezos Earth Fund.
In March, the charity disclosed that it would allocate $60 million to the synthetic meat initiative.
According to the Bezos Earth Fund, the expenditure is a component of a more extensive $1 billion initiative to revolutionize agricultural production in order to reduce emissions and combat climate change.
Before the conclusion of the United Nations climate change conference last year, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations issued a report on agriculture in December 2023.
The FAO, which is led by Qu Dongyu, a former Chinese vice minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, recommended that policymakers modify agricultural systems to address climate change.
