In a troubling incident at the River Glen of St. Charles assisted living facility in Illinois, police reportedly fatally shot a man wielding a chainsaw after a tense standoff on December 2024, which was captured on body camera footage.
The man, identified as Daniel H. Escalera from Indiana, was reportedly on the property to cut down a tree but entered the facility’s lobby and began revving the chainsaw while expressing a desire to see his wife. As officers arrived, they repeatedly instructed him to drop the weapon.
Despite their efforts, Escalera managed to start the chainsaw, prompting one officer to deploy a Taser. However, the Taser was ineffective, and Escalera continued his aggressive behavior, running through the facility and shouting.
Body camera footage revealed Escalera seemingly charging at an officer while wielding the chainsaw, eventually striking the officer before fleeing down a hallway.
During this chaotic scene, he passed several residents, including one using a mobility scooter.
The police ultimately shot Escalera multiple times in response to the imminent threat he posed.
First aid was administered immediately, but Escalera succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
An autopsy indicated that he had traces of amphetamines, methamphetamines, and olanzapine, a medication for schizophrenia, in his system at the time of his death.
Following the incident, a joint statement from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Illinois State Police, and St. Charles Police Department confirmed that the involved officers were cleared of any wrongdoing and commended for their attempts to de-escalate the situation prior to the shooting.
This tragic event raises significant concerns regarding mental health crises and the appropriate responses by law enforcement.
