It’s possible that Saturday’s record-breaking heat in Death Valley National Park contributed to the death of one motorcycle rider and the hospitalization of another.

The gang was reportedly riding close to Badwater Basin, where, on the weekend, temperatures hit a “mind-boggling” 121°F around 10:00 p.m., according to meteorologist Colin McCarthy.

The “Extreme Summer Heat” advisory from the National Park Service advises travelers against hiking after 10:00 a.m. because temperatures could reach as high as 130°F or 100°F. Online images of the park’s unauthorized temperature gauge indicate that 2024 has already exceeded 130°F.
