Court documents indicate that former NFL linebacker Bill Romanowski and his spouse Julie filed for bankruptcy on Monday, amidst claims that they owe the United States government millions in delinquent taxes.
The Romanowskis filed for bankruptcy less than twenty-four hours prior to a scheduled Tuesday hearing in the civil case that attorneys for the Department of Justice filed against them last summer.

This was a tumultuous moment for the couple. Attorneys for the United States assert that the Romanowskis established a nutrition company with the intention of evading their tax responsibilities; as a result, the Romanowskis are currently in debt for over $15.5 million in back taxes.
The Romanowskis will be granted a temporary reprieve under federal law by filing for bankruptcy, which will automatically halt the Department of Justice’s collection efforts on the alleged debts.
