Former baseball player Steve Garvey announced on Tuesday that he will run as a Republican for the late Dianne Feinstein’s U.S. Senate seat.
Garvey, 74, was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers for fourteen years and earned a World Series with them in 1981. Five years were also spent with the San Diego Padres.
During his MLB career, he was even named MVP of the National League. Garvey has contemplated a bid for political office and is now officially entering the race.
In a recent interview, he stated that he views himself as a concerned citizen who seeks to alter the dynamic in Washington, D.C.
“I like to think of myself as a concerned citizen. I started seeing a severe dysfunction in Washington. Career politicians were focusing on the business of politics and not the people. And I decided if there isn’t a voice in California, then I should take a few months and see if there’s a pathway for Steve Garvey to run for the U.S. Senate.” Garvey said.
